How to publish an ebook with Kobo Writing Life
Kobo Writing Life is a direct route for authors and publishers preparing ebooks for Kobo. The key production question is not whether a document resembles a printed book, but whether it works as an ebook. Navigation, reading order, adjustable text and clear cover artwork deserve their own review. A file that converts without an error message can still need editorial and reading checks.
This guide focuses on the decisions around that digital edition. You can prepare it yourself or discuss optional support with Publishing Core. Keep your Kobo Writing Life account, payment details and final approvals under your control, with service fees agreed separately from platform earnings.
Start with an edited and organized manuscript
Choose the manuscript version that will become the ebook. Resolve tracked changes, remove drafting notes and establish consistent headings before conversion. Supply illustrations, captions and notes in an organized package. If the book uses verse, complex tables or image-led pages, explain the intended reading experience before a formatter selects an approach.
A first-time author can make the brief more useful by listing the difficult features. For example: the contents must reach each chapter, notes need working return links, or an illustration should appear beside a particular passage. Test a representative sample rather than assuming the first few pages reveal every issue.
Review an EPUB as a reading system
Kobo's setup guidance accepts EPUB files and certain manuscript formats for conversion. If your source needs conversion, treat the output as a new reading file to inspect. The advantage of a well-prepared ebook is not a fixed page arrangement; it is content that stays understandable as readers change their devices and settings.
Check the contents menu, chapter order, headings, lists, emphasis, special characters and images. Try different text sizes. Look for repeated blank sections, unexpected spacing and text that has become an unreadable image. Resolve validation errors before release and keep a record of any remaining issue that needs a provider's advice.
Match the metadata to the reader's book
Prepare the title, author spelling, description, series details and categories in one approved sheet. Kobo distinguishes publication information from the release date at which a book becomes available to readers. Check the intended meaning of each field rather than entering the same date everywhere by habit.
Read the description without the cover beside it. Does it explain the subject or story, audience and edition clearly? Avoid a list of unrelated search terms or claims that the book cannot support. A cover's title treatment can be expressive, but its words should still agree with the listing and title page.
Prepare useful cover art and identifier records
View the front cover at a small retail-thumbnail size and on a larger screen. The title should stay legible without making the artwork overly busy. Deliver the approved cover separately from promotional mockups, and verify the current image requirements before uploading it. Keep the original design and any agreed source files in your handover.
Review Kobo's current ebook identifier guidance and record what is assigned to this edition. Do not reuse an identifier from another format without checking its suitability. Maintain the same author and edition record across your direct and distributor-managed accounts so later corrections can be coordinated.
Choose territories and programs deliberately
Kobo Writing Life lets you make territory and pricing choices and offers optional Kobo Plus participation where eligible. Review those settings against the rights you hold and any commitments to other services. An author who is also enrolled in an exclusive ebook arrangement elsewhere should resolve that commitment before attempting a wider release.
Record the selected countries, intended prices and program decisions. Digital rights management is another setting to consider under Kobo's current guidance; do not treat it as a complete solution to copying or as a substitute for holding the necessary rights. The author should approve these choices rather than having them selected silently during production.
Check the release and retain an update package
Inspect the final preview, consolidate corrections and approve the corrected ebook. After processing, compare the available listing with the approved metadata and cover. A live listing is still worth checking: a truncated description or incorrect series order can make a technically successful release confusing to readers.
Retain the EPUB, cover, manuscript source, metadata and final approvals. Write down who is responsible for future updates and which account supplies each retailer. Allow for the platform's review process in your schedule. Production support cannot promise reader demand, sales, a promotional selection or a particular position in search results.
