How to publish an ebook on Apple Books

Publishing an ebook on Apple Books begins with a delivery choice. Apple's author guidance describes direct publishing through an iTunes Connect account and its Publishing Portal, alongside other preparation and partner routes. Establish which route will handle your edition before commissioning the final files. A Pages document, a Word manuscript and a finished EPUB are different starting points.

This guide is for authors who want a practical preparation plan. Publishing Core offers optional manuscript editing, ebook formatting, cover design and publishing support. The author retains account control and final decisions; using our services does not mean Apple endorses the project or guarantees acceptance.

Choose who will deliver the edition

If you intend to publish directly, review Apple's current account setup and delivery guidance. If a distributor or other provider will deliver the book, confirm that route and its responsibilities instead. Keep a simple record of the account supplying Apple Books, the edition involved and who will maintain it after release.

Check for an existing delivery arrangement before adding another. A book already supplied by a distributor should not be treated as a completely new project without reviewing the transition. Ask how updates, identifiers and any existing listing are handled. The easiest upload route is not always the clearest long-term maintenance arrangement.

Prepare an EPUB from a controlled source

Choose the approved manuscript version before conversion or layout work begins. Resolve editing changes and remove drafting comments. Identify headings, notes, images and captions consistently. If using Pages, follow Apple's current EPUB export guidance and check whether the intended reading experience calls for reflowable text or another supported layout approach.

For a Word manuscript, plan the conversion rather than assuming the document itself is the finished retail file. A complex illustrated title needs a sample that includes the difficult pages. A straightforward text-led book still needs contents links, chapter structure and sensible reading order. Keep the source document and checked release file separate so future changes can be traced.

Inspect the book as a digital reading experience

Open the finished ebook in an appropriate reading environment and work through the whole navigation structure. Check chapters, internal links, notes and return links. Test text-size changes where supported. Look for clipped content, lost emphasis, unexpected blank sections and images that interrupt the intended order of the writing.

Consider how readers can understand meaningful images and navigate the structure. Where the format supports them, useful descriptions and well-structured headings make the edition easier to use. An attractive screenshot does not show all of those qualities. Ask the formatter which checks were performed and which devices or reading settings were reviewed.

Keep the cover and metadata aligned

Prepare the approved front cover as a distinct listing asset, separate from promotional artwork. Review its title treatment at small size and compare every word with the title page and metadata sheet. Keep the author spelling, series information and edition details consistent. Do not add unsupported endorsements, ratings or awards to make the listing appear established.

Write a description for a reader choosing the book, not a list of every possible search phrase. Explain the subject or story and the intended audience clearly. Keep artwork permissions, font licenses and any relevant source records with the production package. Agree on source-file handover before the design work begins.

Complete account and release decisions yourself

Use an account and recovery details controlled by the author or publishing business. Complete provider agreements, payment and tax steps directly with the relevant service. Publishing assistance should have a defined scope and an agreed end point; it should not turn into permanent dependency on an agency's personal account.

Review the release or preorder arrangement and the available pricing and territory settings using current Apple guidance. Check these against rights and any other digital commitments. Record the approved choices alongside the final files. Avoid announcing a date as guaranteed before the required production and platform review steps are understood.

Review the submission and retain an update plan

Inspect the final delivery package and resolve any validation or review issues through the responsible account. After processing, compare the actual listing with the approved cover and metadata. Keep a clear corrections record, including which file or field needs attention, rather than submitting several competing versions at once.

Retain the EPUB, source document, cover artwork, metadata, permissions and approval history. Note which account will handle a revised edition and which editable files were included in your service agreement. Publication is a release milestone; it is not a guarantee of Apple promotion, search visibility, reader demand or sales.
