How to publish an ebook on Google Play Books
Google's book services have different roles. The Play Books Partner Center lets authors and publishers manage book information and files; readers can discover previews through Google Books and buy eligible ebooks through Google Play. A preview is not the same thing as a book being enabled for sale, and a retail listing does not guarantee a prominent Google search result.
If you want to publish a book on Google Play Books, start with the intended reading format and account eligibility. This guide helps organize the production work. Publishing Core offers optional editing, ebook formatting, cover design and publishing support, with paid services separate from Google's accounts, terms and decisions.
Check account and selling eligibility first
Review Google's current supported countries and account requirements before building a release plan around direct sales. Some Partner Center functions depend on the partner's sales eligibility and access. Use contact and recovery information you control, and complete account agreements, tax and payment information directly with Google.
Record who will manage the catalog, who approves the book and who checks reports. Where suitable account access is available, agree the responsibilities and limits of any assistance. Never send a Google password, financial details or identity documents through a public publishing inquiry form. File preparation does not require handing permanent ownership of your account to an agency.
Choose EPUB, PDF or a planned combination
Google's file guidance accepts EPUB and PDF content files. An EPUB can offer adaptable text, while a PDF preserves the designed page. Consider what the book actually needs: a text-led novel and a carefully composed visual guide may call for different reading experiences. If both formats are supplied, review each one as a complete edition.
Do not treat an editable manuscript as the final upload package. Resolve editing, then format and validate the output. For EPUB, test navigation, reading order, notes and text-size changes. For PDF, inspect page geometry, bookmarks where used, image quality and small text at realistic viewing sizes. The file should contain the intended complete book rather than an accidental working sample.
Prepare readable artwork and controlled files
Deliver the approved cover separately from promotional mockups and check Google's current cover specifications. Compare the title and author spelling across the cover, content file and metadata sheet. Make sure the release file is clearly named so a draft or partial excerpt cannot be mistaken for the finished ebook.
Keep permissions for illustrations, photographs, quoted material and fonts in the project record. Where an image carries essential information, consider how it remains understandable in the digital edition. For a complex book, approve a representative sample before formatting every chapter, then check the full export for issues the sample could not reveal.
Review preview and sales settings separately
Google Books preview settings and Google Play sales settings serve different purposes. Decide what readers should be able to preview and where the eligible ebook should be offered for sale. Inspect the actual settings in Partner Center instead of assuming that uploading a file automatically completes every part of the release.
Record the chosen territories, prices and release arrangements alongside the book's rights information. Check any digital exclusivity commitments before adding another sales channel. If the book is already delivered to Google by a distributor, resolve which account will supply and maintain it rather than creating overlapping deliveries.
Write metadata that explains the book
Use a concise description of the work, its audience and its edition. Choose relevant subject information and keep series and contributor details consistent. A phrase such as I want to publish a book describes an author's service need; the book's own description should explain what a reader is choosing to read.
Maintain one approved metadata sheet and update it whenever the edition changes. Avoid unrelated keywords, competing author names or unsupported bestseller claims. Accurate metadata helps the service present the correct book, but it does not purchase a particular position in Google Search or guarantee discovery by every potential reader.
Inspect the release and retain the final package
Review validation messages and preview the complete content before release. Check the public book information after processing and verify that the available reading formats match your plan. Record a specific issue with the relevant file, page or listing field so it can be corrected through the account responsible for the edition.
Keep the EPUB, PDF where applicable, cover, manuscript source, metadata, permissions and final approval. Agree on future-update responsibilities and any source files included in a paid scope. Google's review and processing remain external steps; production assistance cannot promise acceptance, ranking, promotional placement or sales.
